City Island Garden Club

Founded in 1960 by four passionate local women, the City Island Garden Club has blossomed into a dedicated group of nearly 40 members who share a love of gardening and a deep pride in their unique island home. Today, the club meets on the first Monday of each month at the City Island Yacht Club, continuing a tradition of learning, connection, and community beautification.

While the club once competed in state flower shows—rivaling groups like the Larchmont Garden Club—its mission has evolved over the years. Now, the City Island Garden Club focuses on projects that serve the entire community. From planting and maintaining the flower boxes along City Island Avenue to leading annual island-wide clean-up efforts and restoring Hawkins Park, the club brings color, care, and civic spirit to the neighborhood.

The club welcomes friends and neighbors to participate in its efforts as their schedules allow. Most members are long-time City Island residents, and while the club remains proudly all-female, its doors are open to anyone who shares its love for nature and community.

Notable Activities: Focuses on beautifying City Island in the Bronx through seasonal plantings and planters. For instance, the club coordinated the installation of new spring planters along City Island Avenue (with support from local businesses). The club regularly holds meetings at the City Island Yacht Club and participates in local community events.
